Basic tools untuk membuat stempel dari linocut dan block printing.

Sudah beberapa tahun ini saya membuat stempel untuk karya seni dan produk tekstil saya. Pertama kali saya menggunakan penghapus untuk membuat stempel berukuran kecil, saat ini saya menggunakan linocut dan membuat stempel ukuran besar dan kali ini saya ingin mengulas alat-alat yang diperlukan untuk membuat stempel dari linocut.

1. Carving tools
Saya menggunakan alat carving dari speedball (USA), Seed (Jepang), dan alat cukil lokal yang dapat gampang dibeli di banyak toko alat lukis dan bahkan di toko buku. Speedball memiliki banyak pisau yang dapat diganti dan dari berbagai ukuran, saya biasanya menggunakan pisau no.1 atau ukuran terkecil untuk mengukir gambar yang detail. Seed saya dapatkan dari sebuah stamp carving kit  dan pisaunya sangat tajam dan berkualitas tinggi. Alat cukil lokal yang saya gunakan adalah yang berbentuk U, pisaunya tidak terlalu bagus dan gampang tumpul, jadi harus stok banyak apabila hanya menggunakan alat cukil lokal ini.

2. Carving block
Banyak material yang bisa digunakan untuk membuat stempel ukir, dari penghapus, linocut, linoleum block, dan kayu. Untuk saat ini saya menggunakan linocut, linocut adalah versi modern dari linoleum block dan terbuat dari karet, linoleum block terbuat dari serat-serat natural yang dipres. Ada juga material penghapus yang dibuat khusus untuk stempel ukir, beberapanya adalah Speedy carve, Moo carve, dan Seed dan jenis ini sangat mudah diukir,saking mudahnya harus berhati-hati agar tidak mengukir terlalu banyak.

3. Bench Hook
Alat ini memudahkan saat sedang mengukir, fungsinya untuk menahan blok agar tidak terpeleset saat diukir, alat ini cocok untuk pemula agar tidak terjadi kecelakaan karena menggunakan alat tajam. Bentuknya bisa dilihat di gambar di bawah, terdapat penahan bawah untuk ditaruh di pinggir meja dan penahan atas untuk menahan blok yang diukir. Ada yang terbuat dari kayu dan lempengan besi. Pada gambar adalah bench hook yang dibuat sendiri oleh suami saya ☺.

4. Brayer
Alat ini adalah roller untuk mengaplikasikan tinta ke blok, terbuat dari karet dan memiliki beberapa jenis karet dari yang lentur sampai yang keras, dan juga memiliki banyak ukuran.

5. Kertas kalkir/ kertas karbon
Kertas-kertas ini digunakan untuk mentrasfer gambar yang telah kita buat ke blok untuk membuat stempel, banyak teknik transfer yang berbeda karena tidak semua bisa digunakan di material yang sama. teknik transfer akan saya ulas lebih lengkap di posting yang berbeda.

6. Tinta
Tergantung media yang digunakan untuk menstempel, tinta yang digunakan pun berbeda, tinta untuk kertas, untuk kain dan media lainnya. Tinta block print memiliki konsistensi yang lebih pekat dari tinta lainnya agar tinta dapat melekat pada blok dan juga pada material yang digunakan. Tinta untuk kertas dapat menggunakan tinta etching atau tinta offset. Tinta block print untuk kain tidak tersedia di Indonesia, at least yang saya tahu, tapi kita bisa memodifikasi bahkan membuat sendiri tinta block print untuk kain, selengkapnya tentang tinta kain dan apa yang saya gunakan akan saya ulas di post lain.

7. Alat-alat lainnya
Tidak terlihat di gambar adalah:
- Kaca untuk meroll tinta
- Kertas tissue untuk membersihkan, karena kita tidak mau ada tinta yang mengering di alat kita
- Spon ati, biasa digunakan saat mencetak kain sebagai alas.
- Baren, alat untuk menggosok medium saat dicetak, biasa digunakan saat mencetak pada media kertas, bisa juga menggunakan sendok kayu. Atau kamu bisa investasi ke alat press ☺.

Eraser Carving Stamp Workshop

I was having a workshop last couple of weeks, and it's my first time teaching workshop out of town and it's very exciting. The workshop was held on a Handmade Movement event in Jakarta, actually I forgot my carving tools but fortunately I have enough cutters for the students to use, fiuuh. There's bloody scene too because some of my students accidentally cuts them self , (note to my self to bring band aids on workshops).

Handmade Stamp Workshop #1

Yippie!! My first workshop!! For this first workshop. I teach handmade stamps, some of my students cancelled on the last minute but it's okay. It's still fun.




I have a young student, only 4,5 years old! I didn't give her carving tools, knife and eraser. Instead I gave her styrofoam from take out box and a pencil, so she could still make her own stamp.

The place that I held the workshop is a coffee shop, Sellie Coffee located in Prawirotaman II Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Selling range of different coffee from all over Nusantara plus the food is great. And they gave me free snacks and drinks for this workshop, LOVE!

Eraser Stamp Carving

Yay! finally I made my first eraser stamp, it’s so popular these days. Unfortunately in my country there’s not much tools available specially made for rubber/eraser carving. There’s no carving block nor the carving tools, well.. we have carving tools but there’s no size 1 for detail like the speedball or staedler has.

Luckily my friend gave me this vintage carving tool that has small size although it’s not size one, and I think it’s intended for a different media like wood. But there’s a say here in my country “tak ada rotan, akar pun jadi” literally means “there’s no rattan, then root it is” which meaaans we could use everything available that we have to make it happen.. So I make it happens.

Simple DIY Stamp

Today i made a stamp for my shop PAPERON, instead of having it custom made in some professional stamp maker (dont wanna cost anything for this haha). I decided to just make one, its very simple and i wanna show you how I made it with this step by step DIY pictures. It's really cost nothing because I already have all I need in my stash.

First you'll need

template of what your stamp would be. I used my PAPERON sticker

Craft foam (thicker for big stamp, thinner for tiny stamp)

ruler

craft knife or scissor

glue or spray sealant (go with spray if you have one)

Thick plastic for the stamp base. You could use a block of wood or acrylic if you have one

HOW TO :

put your template on the foam, or trace it to the foam

Cut along the trace or your template, you could use a craft knife for the detail parts

After you finish cutting the template (mine are not to neat hehe, but its okay), line it for your desire position. Right side facing upward

Glue down the plastic or wood to the stamp, mine using a clear glue (thats what I have) so its messy (that blotchy thingy around the stamp) but you could wipe it later.

Cut the excess plastic. If you using a block of wood, measure a little bit larger than your stamp and cut it before gluing to the stamp.

Now you have a new stamp and ready for a try

Get your ink stamp and paper and try if the stamp is working nice.

Looks nice right? Now im gonna stamp all my paper wrapper for my shop with it.
